The powerful 1995 is probably the source of more offensive creativity than any other team in the Osborne-era. One of my favorite experiments that year was the five wide receiver set used in the Fiesta Bowl. Knowing Coach Osborne's stoic persona, it is hard to believe that he would prepare a formation especially as a message to the media who labeled Steve Spurrior's wide open passing sets as innovative. But I do! This play is included on the More Than Winning DVD's Xs &Os section (which gives me the formation's Husker name) and Osborne's wry smile when speaking of the play is very telling, I think. What better exclamation mark on that Gator-thrashing than to line up in the UF-like five wide set and then run an all-time Husker battering ram play like 34 Quarterback Trap! |
