Off-tackle Trap (32/38 Trap)

Off-tackle trap

Play call: 32/38 Trap

The off-tackle trap is executed by the playside guard. He pulls outside and traps the last man on the line-of-scrimmage. The fullback takes off-tackle handoff and follows that block. The playside tackle and tight end down block as the guard pulls behind them. The QB and IB run belly option action.

For a textbook of the off-tackle trap, set your VCR to Corey Schlessingers first TD in the 1995 Orange Bowl. The backfield action shows belly option, but this time it isnt a fake to the FB. Joel Wilks pulls around Zach Wiegert and inside of Eric Alford, who kicks out the end man on the line-of-scrimmage. Wilks stands up the outside linebacker and Schlessinger waltzes into the end zone and and puts Duncan, Nebraska, on the map for the Cornhusker Nation.

Companion plays: The G-scheme belly option (32/38 option) is the natural companion of the off-tackle trap because the backfield and blocking are nearly identical, with the QB faking and following the FB.

Nebraska also runs play-action passing off of this action.

Formations: Any two-back (or three-back) set.
